Bird & Butterfly

DESCRIPTION

Bird & Butterfly is a mixture of annual, perennial and biennial wildflower species that are native and naturalized to the Pacific Northwest, specially selected to attract butterflies, hummingbirds as well as other birds to gardens.  Grows to three feet high.  Requires full sun.

Once established, the Bird & Butterfly requires no fertilizer, minimal watering, and only one trimming at the end of every season. These characteristics make it ideal for use in low maintenance, naturally landscaped areas that require a combination of full color and ease of care.  A meadow effect can be achieved by mixing a bunch type grass such as Idaho fescue or Blue fescue to the seed mix  at a ratio of  2  1/2  parts grass to 1 part Bird & Butterfly.

ESTABLISHMENT

& MANAGEMENT

Seeding rate:       1 lbs. per 4000 sq. ft.

10 lbs. per acre

Remove all unwanted vegetation with the use of an herbicide such as Round-Up, following label directions. Prepare the site by plowing, disking, harrowing or hand raking to create a fine seed bed. Sow the seed and roll in or lightly rake to a depth of  1/8” to 1/4”.  Care must be taken not to plant the seeds too deeply, as this is a primary cause of seeding failure.

Bird & Butterfly does best in soils of low fertility.  Keep the planting area moist for 4-6 weeks to help ensure full germination. You should begin to see seedlings in about 2-3 weeks and the first flowers in about 6-10 weeks. To prolong blooming, water occasionally during very dry periods.  Hand pull or spray aggressive weeds to reduce competition and aid in establishment.

Mow  Bird & Butterfly in the Fall to a height of 4”-6” after flowers have finished blooming, set seed, and turned brown (usually mid-October). Leave clippings in place as they contain seeds for next year’s growth. Consider supplementing the site next Spring with some new seed to more firmly establish the planting and to suppress weed growth.  To preserve the original balance of the seed mixture, Bird & Butterfly should be re-seeded every 3-5 years.
